Pipe organ and church organ multi-mic phase: close/pipe/spot vs room/OH fold

Organ close, pipe, and spot mics feel huge in the loft and in control-room headphones. On stream, YouTube, or broadcast mono fold, body and pedal often thin or cancel against room and OH paths that carry the same pipes a few milliseconds later. That is usually polarity and arrival time between close/spot and room/OH, plus a stereo loft bed that was never folded before send. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo organ beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not an organ compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for loft gain structure or mono audition of the stream or broadcast bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What organ multi-mic phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the stream / broadcast / matrix bus (not only loft headphones). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B closes and spots muted vs open under OH/room. Note what disappears: pedal, principal body, reed bite, mixture sparkle.
  3. Solo pairs: pipe/close vs room, division spots vs OH, stereo loft vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with manuals muted vs full (correlation meters).

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between close/pipe/spot and room/OH

Flip pipe vs nave room, or division spots vs OH, when pedal or principal body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related worship habit: church / worship multi-mic.

2. Small delay align closes and spots to the room / OH

Close and pipe mics arrive earlier than loft OH or nave room. A few samples of delay on closes (or nudge to the room) often restores pedal better than any widener. Different job from spectral repair: vs time-align.

3. One hero organ image to the stream or broadcast bus

Do not send every pipe, spot, and room path all hot into the livestream matrix. Pick a hero image (often OH/room or a balanced stereo loft pair), keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-pedal on phone fold. Related: orchestral spot vs section, overhead & room.

4. Prefer room/OH as the body; quieter close/pipe color

Closes and pipe spots should color reed bite and chiff, not replace the room for the stream mix. If every close sits at full level under loud OH, mono fold almost always hollows pedal. Pull closes first.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on organ beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make loft headphones huge and phones hollow. Guides: vs imagers, Haas vs phase repair.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo loft bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Organ stream / broadcast checklist (to send)

1. Label close/pipe/spot vs room/OH paths

Name pipe, division spots, loft OH, and nave room so operators know what hits the livestream or broadcast. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check delivery bus alone, then with full ranks

Solo pedal and principals in mono. Then open reeds and mixtures in mono. Note fights between close color and room body. Related: choir / ensemble.

3. Watch phone and social destinations

Most remote viewers hear mono or near-mono. Guides: YouTube / social, church / worship, phone / BT.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before service or session

Host-agnostic habit before you go live or print: DAW null-test + mono-check, master bus mono checklist.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo delivery bus in mono → polarity close/pipe/spot vs room/OH → delay-align closes → one hero organ image → quieter closes under hero room/OH → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full ranks → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a loft bed → fold again for YouTube / stream / broadcast.
